The headword list is selected on the basis of frequency, which
means that the entry words given are those most likely to be looked up
by the user.
The key synonym for each sense is shown first, which not only
offers you the most helpful alternative but also lets you identify the
sense in question at a glance. Other synonyms are arranged in order of
their frequency of occurrence, with the more literary or unfamiliar
ones coming towards the end. In this way the thesaurus becomes a
powerful aid to help you express yourself in the most suitable style for
your purpose.
A wide range of phrases and idioms is also included, both as
lookup points and as alternatives, to add colour and interest to your
language.
As well as generous synonym lists, the inclusion of full antonym
lists for many key words provides another way of expressing yourself.
The “related words” feature enables you to find information such
s adjectives, collective nouns connected with many entry words. Such
words are usually hard to find unless you already have an idea of what
the related word might be, but by looking up, for instance, the entry
for
spider
, you will find that its related adjective is
arachnoid
and
that fear of spiders is
arachnophobia
. The arrangement of such words
under the main entry word enables you to go to it straight away.
Informative usage notes are also included at many entries. These
give advice on good English and help you to avoid some of the more
common language mistakes.
The most famous dictionaries of such type are
Roget’s Thesau-
