P Oh, goodness, anything up to six, seven hours.
Dr How long have you had the headaches?
P I’d say, for about three months now.
Dr Are there any other symptoms?
P No, not really … but my husband reckons I’m going deaf.
Dr What seems to improve the situation for you?
P Normally I lie down for a while and I turn off the light. That
seems to help.
Dr Since this is your first visit to the practice, I’d like to have a
more detailed picture of things. Could you tell me about any
illnesses you might have had in the past?
P I had my tonsils out when I was a little kid, I remember that.
Dr Any other childhood illnesses?
P Don’t remember, to be honest – my mother would know, I’d
expect. Mumps, measles, that kind of thing, usual stuff
Dr Regular childhood illnesses, then? So, have you had any op-
erations, apart from the tonsils?
P No, no. Like I say, I’m pretty healthy.
Dr Have you ever suffered from allergies?
P No, that I know of. My brother always got hay fever, poor
thing, but not me.
Dr Are you allergic to any medications – some people are aller-
gic to penicillin, for example?
P No.
Dr And finally. Are you on any medications at all, Ms Wilson?
P Ah, yes. I took antibiotics, when I had a very bad cold.
Dr I’m now going to ask you some questions about your job.
What type of work do you do?
P I’m a cleaner at a big hotel in town, part-time.
Dr It’s important you to describe your work to give me an idea
about why you’re suffering from these headaches attacks.
P Oh right. I’m generally on bedroom duty, I suppose I clean
about 15 bedrooms on average every morning.
Dr And are you exposed to any toxic products at work?
P Toxic? Don’t know if they’re toxic or not – they’re regulation
cleaning products, so I imagine they’re OK.
Dr So, I’d like to sum up your history briefly to make sure I have
all the details correct before we proceed …
