16. Respiration is subjected to the control of the cerebral cortex, this
being demonstrated by the fact that a person can voluntarily hold
his breath for a very short time or change both the rate and depth
of respiration.
17. During the experiment the node and efferent vessels were
cleaned, care being taken to avoid trauma to the structures.
18. The experiment having been finished, we were ready to discuss it.
19. Respiration is usually either an automatic or a reflex act, each ex-
piration sending up afferent, sensory impulses to the central nerv-
ous system.
20. The air passes rhythmically into and out of the passages, and mix-
es with the air already in the lungs, these two movements being
known as inspiration and expiration.
