The second (systematic) part of the book contains determination tables and descriptions of
46 pulmonate species inhabiting waterbodies of Western Siberia and adjacent regions. Each
species is described along the same scheme that includes Latin and Russian species name, syn-
onymy, information about its type locality and place where the type series is housed, amount of
specimens examined, description of shell and anatomical structure of genitals (if available),
and notes on geographical distribution and bionomical preferences of the species. If necessary,
comments on the species’ nomenclature status and their diagnostic features are provided. The
maps of each species’ distribution in Western Siberia are given.
In most cases, species can be identified on the base of their shell feature. However, in
some instances it is impossible to determine lymnaeids by conchological traits only (for exam-
ple, within the subgenus
Stagnicola
of the genus
Lymnaea
) and anatomical characters were in-
cluded into determination tables.
Though there are many points in freshwater pulmonate taxonomy that remain still unre-
solved, we hope that this “Key” will be helpful for systematists and experts in another spheres
of science that are interested in exact determination of lymnaeid and acroloxid species. The
results presented in this edition have to constitute the base for further studies in Western Sibe-
rian aqautic pulmonate taxonomy.
